New Delhi, August 30: In the wake of the catastrophic floods along the Nepal-Tibet border, the Isha Foundation has issued an emotional and detailed update for the families of missing persons. The foundation reported that search and rescue operations are ongoing in the Gyirong Port area, led by Chinese authorities. However, based on current facts and ground information, there are no encouraging signs regarding survivors.
The Isha Foundation explained that the delay in sharing updates was due to their commitment to providing only verified and reliable information to the families. Their team gathered data from various sources and confirmed it through local contacts.
According to the Isha Foundation, rescuers equipped with necessary tools have been deployed by the Chinese administration at Gyirong Port. However, operations were temporarily halted on August 28 due to the threat of a second flood, resuming later at noon local time.
The foundation reported that the entire immigration office complex at Gyirong Port has been swept away by the floods. Publicly available images, videos, satellite pictures, and information from locals confirm the extent of this devastation. As of now, there have been no indications of any survivors from the immigration office area.
The Isha Foundation’s team is stationed on both sides of the border. The team on the Chinese side is located about 25 kilometers from the Gyirong site, where access is permitted. This team maintains constant communication with the officials involved in the relief and rescue efforts. Meanwhile, the coordination team on the Nepal side is based in Kathmandu, as access to the affected area is currently restricted. Relief operations are also facing challenges due to washed-away roads and bridges in Nepal.
The Isha Foundation has stated that it is in continuous coordination with the Prime Minister‘s Office of India, Indian embassies in Kathmandu and Beijing, the Nepali Army’s search and rescue team, Nepal Tourism Police, and other government agencies. Information about the missing persons has also been shared with the relevant rescue agencies.
The organization mentioned that lists of rescued individuals are being continuously matched. So far, none of the official lists released by China have included any members from their group. Similarly, no identification has been made from the rescue lists issued by the Nepal government.
According to the Isha Foundation, local experts and eyewitnesses have reported that debris and silt have accumulated up to 45 to 50 feet in the Gyirong Port valley. Experts believe that the flood’s intensity was so high that the chances of anyone surviving are extremely low. It was reported that the mixture of water and debris rose to about 150 feet, completely destroying the entire building complex.
The Isha Foundation expressed that they had hoped for positive news from the site, but the facts presented so far indicate the severity of the situation. They clarified that due to limited access to the area, it is not possible to independently verify every piece of information. However, the shared information is based on reports from authorities, media, and local sources.
In closing, the Isha Foundation extended its condolences to the affected families, stating that this is an unimaginable tragedy that has shaken the entire community.
