Understanding the Importance of Matsyasana After Sarvangasana and Halasana

New Delhi, September 10 (Daily Kiran) : Yoga poses each hold unique significance, but their benefits are maximized only when performed in the correct sequence and balance. Sarvangasana and Halasana are considered essential postures, yet they can create pressure in the body. To counteract this, Matsyasana is deemed a necessary counter-pose.

This article explores why practicing Matsyasana immediately after Sarvangasana and Halasana is crucial. According to guidelines from the Ministry of Ayush and the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, performing Matsyasana afterward is vital to balance the effects of the previous poses. When practitioners engage in Sarvangasana and Halasana, physical changes occur that Matsyasana helps to restore.

Both Sarvangasana and Halasana are classified as inversion poses, where the chest leans forward and the chin rests against the chest. In Matsyasana, when the top of the head touches the ground and the spine and neck are bent backward, it effectively balances the pressure created in the Jalandhar Bandha.

Yoga experts note that during Halasana and Sarvangasana, there is significant tension in the spine and the muscles at the back of the neck. This tension can lead to stiffness in the upper neck and back muscles. Matsyasana provides an excellent counter-stretch by bending the spine in the opposite direction, relieving stiffness and tension in the neck, shoulders, and spine, thus restoring muscle balance.

The deep pressure on the neck and throat during these poses can lead to tightness in the body. Matsyasana is essential for alleviating this tightness and maintaining overall balance. The principle of yoga states that if the body is deeply twisted in one direction, it must be safely twisted in the opposite direction to maintain equilibrium. While Sarvangasana and Halasana involve forward bending, Matsyasana serves as their precise backward bending remedy, protecting the spine and neck from injury.

However, it is crucial to consult a specialist before attempting these poses, especially for individuals with serious health issues, recent surgeries, or those who are pregnant.
