New Delhi, February 26: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated a project on Thursday to move overhead power lines underground in Chandni Chowk. She emphasized that this initiative is not just a technical upgrade, but a commitment to preserving, organizing, and beautifying our heritage.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, Chief Minister Gupta stated, “Delhi has taken a strong step towards the future while honoring its past. Chandni Chowk has been a vibrant center of trade and culture for centuries. The havelis here testify to history, and the streets preserve our heritage. However, the overhead power lines have long obscured this beauty and posed safety challenges.”
The project to bury overhead power lines is part of a larger initiative that includes the laying of a 66/11 kV GIS grid sub-station in Mandoli and battery energy storage systems in Shivalik, Dwarka, and Goyla Khurd. These efforts will ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to millions of families.
Speaking to reporters, Gupta noted that Chandni Chowk is a historic area. The dangerous hanging wires have been a significant issue here. The Energy Ministry has initiated the underground wiring project at a cost of approximately ₹1.6 billion across 28 major roads.
She remarked that this historic locale encapsulates the history, development, traditions, and culture of our country in one place. The essence of India’s heritage, fragrance, and hospitality can be felt in the air of Old Delhi. Development in such areas is crucial.
The Chief Minister expressed her satisfaction that one of the major problems in Chandni Chowk—entangled, hanging, and hazardous power lines that often caused accidents and obstructed views of the sky—has now been addressed with the commencement of the underground wiring project by the Energy Ministry.
