UCC Aims for Equal Rights, Not Against Any Religion: Harsh Sanghvi

Gandhinagar, March 24: Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi argued in the Gujarat Assembly on Tuesday that the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is essential to eliminate legal inequalities faced by women.

Speaking during a discussion following Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s introduction of the bill, Sanghvi stated that disparities arising from personal laws have created a scenario where women struggle to attain justice.

He emphasized that the Constitution guarantees legal rights to all citizens, urging those who genuinely believe in the Constitution and democracy not to oppose the UCC.

Sanghvi outlined the proposed framework, which is based on four pillars: gender justice, legitimacy, nationality, and democracy. He announced that Gujarat would take steps to implement this code, following Uttarakhand.

Citing Goa as an example, he noted that a Uniform Civil Code has been in place there since before independence, and no injustices have occurred as a result.

Criticizing the opposition, Sanghvi remarked that parties in power for decades have adhered to appeasement and conservative mindsets.

Responding to Gujarat Congress President Amit Chavda’s claim that the draft report should have been made public, he stated that if Chavda had studied the bill, he would have at least commented on two provisions.

He further mentioned that during committee meetings on the UCC, Congress members consistently expressed one opinion: “We do not need the UCC right now.”

Sanghvi asserted that the people of Gujarat are not waiting for Congress’s mindset and ideas.

According to him, approximately 2 million suggestions and responses were received during consultations.

He reiterated that the proposed law is not against any religion, referencing a statement by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who said that the UCC aims to ensure equal legal rights.
