New Delhi, February 12: U.S. Vice President JD Vance has made it clear that the United States is not planning to remove or change the Iranian government. Instead, the focus is on ensuring that Tehran remains free of nuclear weapons.
While returning from a visit to Azerbaijan, Vance addressed reporters at the airport. When asked if he wanted to change the government in Iran, he stated, “If the Iranian people want to remove their government, that is up to them. Right now, we are focused on preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.”
Vance emphasized that President Trump has instructed his team to pursue a deal that guarantees Iranians do not possess nuclear weapons. However, he noted that if such a deal cannot be reached, there are alternative options available. “The President will keep his options open,” he added.
Highlighting America’s military strength, Vance remarked that President Trump has numerous options at his disposal, given that the U.S. has the most powerful military in the world. He assured that as long as the President does not instruct otherwise, the U.S. will continue to engage in discussions, striving for a positive outcome through dialogue.
Vance’s comments indicate a shift in the U.S. approach. Recently, the U.S. appeared open to the idea of regime change in Iran. President Trump had urged protesters to “take over” the country’s institutions amid widespread demonstrations.

Trump has repeatedly threatened Tehran, stating that if it does not agree to a deal that reduces its nuclear capabilities and rolls back its ballistic missile program, military action could follow.
