Dhaka, March 14: The second ODI match between Bangladesh and Pakistan took place at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium on Friday. The game has sparked discussions due to the controversial run-out of Salman Ali Agha. The manner in which Agha was dismissed has been deemed against the spirit of the game. Following the match, Agha shared his thoughts on the incident.
In a media interaction, Agha stated, “I believe there should be sportsmanship. He was trying to return the ball to Mehdi. In such a situation, it could have been declared dead.”
He continued, “The ball hit my pad and then my bat. Therefore, I felt they could not run me out, as the ball had already touched my pad and bat. I was just trying to return the ball to them. I wasn’t looking for a run, but he had already decided to run me out.”
Agha expressed that while Bangladesh’s actions were within the laws of the game, he would have handled it differently. “If they think it’s right, then it’s right. But from my perspective, I would approach it differently. I prioritize sportsmanship. We have never done something like this before, and we will not do it in the future.”
After being run out, Agha appeared visibly upset and used strong words towards the Bangladeshi players. He reflected, “In that moment, I reacted out of anger. That moment gave me some perspective. Some things should be handled differently.”
Regarding his argument with Bangladeshi wicketkeeper Liton Das, Agha admitted, “I don’t remember what I was saying and what he was saying. I’m sure I wasn’t saying nice things, and neither was he. But it was just the heat of the moment, so we are fine. I haven’t reconciled with Mehdi yet, but don’t worry, I will find him.”
The incident occurred during the fourth ball of the 39th over of Pakistan’s innings. After Mohammad Rizwan played a delivery from Mehdi Hasan Miraz back towards the bowler, Miraz collided with Agha, who was standing outside the non-striker’s crease while attempting to field the ball. As the ball had stopped, Agha abandoned his intention to take a single and began to return the ball to Miraz. In the meantime, Miraz threw the ball at the stumps, resulting in Agha being declared run out after an appeal to the third umpire. This decision has been viewed as contrary to the spirit of the game.
Bangladesh captain Mehdi Hasan Miraz commented on the incident, saying, “My intention was only to stop the ball and prevent a possible run. He was out of the crease, and I was just going for the ball. If I had missed it, he could have easily taken a run, so I decided to throw at the stumps.”
In terms of the match, after losing the toss and batting first, Pakistan scored 274 runs with contributions from Maj Sadakat (75), Agha (64), and Rizwan (44). Due to rain, Bangladesh was set a target of 243 runs in 32 overs under the DLS method. However, they were bowled out for just 114 runs, losing the match by a significant margin of 128 runs.
