Two More Arrested in Panchayat Head Murder Case After Police Encounter

Chandigarh, February 25: In a significant development regarding the murder of Aam Aadmi Party‘s Panchayat head, Harbarinder Singh, police have arrested two more suspects following an encounter. This brings the total number of arrests in the case to four.

SSP Surendra Lamba reported that on Wednesday, police received a tip-off about two suspects on a motorcycle in the Jalloke area of the Sadar Patti police station. Acting on this information, a joint team led by Station House Officer Bipin Kumar, along with Bindarjit Singh from the Sarhali police station and the AGTF, set up a checkpoint and initiated a search operation.

During the operation, the team spotted two individuals approaching on a motorcycle. When signaled to stop, the suspects attempted to flee. In the ensuing chase, they opened fire on the police. In response, the police fired back, injuring Romanpreet Singh with two bullets. He is in critical condition, while Arshdeep Singh sustained a gunshot wound to the knee. Both individuals have been hospitalized.

SSP Lamba stated that the police are making continuous progress in the investigation of the Panchayat head murder case. He added that both suspects are currently in custody and being interrogated to determine the size of their gang and their whereabouts. The police also recovered two pistols and a motorcycle from the suspects.

On February 18, the sitting Panchayat head of Punjab’s Tarn Taran was shot dead. The assailants opened fire while Harpinder Singh was attending a wedding ceremony at Siddhu Farm on the Bathinda-Tarn Taran National Highway.

Following the incident, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann reviewed the investigation with police officials. Given the seriousness of the case, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav instructed DIG Snehdeep Sharma of the Ferozepur range and SSP Surendra Lamba of Tarn Taran to personally oversee the investigation and ensure the swift arrest of the suspects to bring them to justice.
