Chennai, August 4: Legislators from the Tamilaga Vetrikazhagam (TVK) will convene at the party headquarters in Panaiyur, Chennai, on Tuesday. The meeting will focus on discussions regarding the Vijay government’s first budget and strategies for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly session.
All TVK legislators are expected to attend the meeting scheduled for 4 PM. Key topics will include the 2026-27 general budget, the agricultural budget, and other significant issues that may arise during the Assembly session.
This meeting holds particular importance as the Tamil Nadu Assembly will reconvene on Wednesday to present the general budget. Finance Minister Maria Wilson will unveil the budget, marking the first for the TVK government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. The following day, Agriculture Minister Vinod will present the agricultural budget for 2026-27.
Subsequent discussions will cover both budgets, with the Assembly likely to consider grant requests for various departments. The budget session is expected to last approximately one and a half months.
The first session of the 17th Tamil Nadu Assembly commenced on June 18, following the new government’s assumption of office, with the Governor’s address. Discussions on the motion of thanks for the Governor’s address took place on June 19, 22, and 23, culminating with Chief Minister Vijay responding on the last day. The session was then adjourned indefinitely for four days.
As the government prepares to present its first full budget, it is anticipated that many promises and welfare schemes outlined in the TVK’s election manifesto will be incorporated.
The Chief Minister has already announced that a scheme to provide gold rings to newborns will launch on September 15, coinciding with the birthday of former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai.
The government is also taking steps to fulfill other electoral commitments, including providing eligible consumers with 200 units of free electricity each month. Another significant promise includes waiving crop loans up to ₹75,000.
During Tuesday’s meeting, a review of these promises and other proposals is expected before the budget presentation. Additionally, strategies for the upcoming debates on the budget and departmental fund allocations in the Assembly will be discussed.
