Newtown, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : In a tragic incident on Sunday afternoon, a five-story building in Satya Niketan, Delhi, collapsed, resulting in the deaths of at least six people. The structure, which housed a boys’ hostel, was approximately 50 years old.
Dilip Ghosh, a minister from West Bengal, responded to the disaster during a media briefing. He expressed sorrow over the collapse and emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the building’s construction and the circumstances surrounding the students residing there. “It is very unfortunate that this hostel collapsed and students were affected. We must investigate who built this building and why students were living in it. This is a serious concern,” he stated.
Following accusations from Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal about government negligence, Ghosh questioned why Kejriwal did not initiate an investigation during his tenure. “Why didn’t Kejriwal investigate this building while he was in power? Now that an accident has occurred, he is raising questions against the government,” Ghosh remarked.
The incident drew further commentary from Rahul Gandhi, who also raised concerns regarding the collapse. Ghosh responded, “Rahul Gandhi asks questions but has no answers. Students in Karnataka are living in a cowshed; he has no response to that.”
Regarding the attack on Humayun Kabir, Ghosh criticized the BJP’s involvement, suggesting that throwing eggs was not a necessary action. “Those who did this will face the consequences of their actions. Anyone experiencing such incidents should reflect on their history; they will find all the answers,” he added.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) confirmed that 11 injured individuals were treated at the JPN Apex Trauma Centre. Among the injured, five were brought in dead, and one later succumbed to injuries. Three others remain hospitalized, with one undergoing surgery for severe injuries, while another with minor injuries was discharged after observation.
In response to the incident, the Delhi Police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the building’s owner and others involved at the South Campus police station.
