Chennai, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay launched a strong attack on the opposition party DMK on Monday, accusing it and several of its senior leaders of involvement in corruption during their time in power.
Responding to a debate in the Assembly regarding funding for the police department, Vijay stated that while political criticism is acceptable, derogatory comments against women will not be tolerated. He emphasized that anyone making obscene or insulting remarks about women would face legal action.
Vijay also condemned statements allegedly made by DMK officials against those who did not vote for the party. He argued that such comments reflect a lack of respect for the people’s choices, which is why the DMK is currently in the opposition.
Addressing the allegations of corruption, CM Vijay referred to documents and outcomes he claimed were available in official records and the Assembly library. He cited the 1977 Sarkaria Commission report and accused the DMK of misconduct related to the Veeranam pipeline project. According to him, there were demands for commissions in awarding contracts, and the Chief Minister’s Office was allegedly misused to benefit a specific company.
He also mentioned allegations from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding the collection of funds under the guise of party financing, claiming that commissions of 7.5 to 10 percent were taken in some transactions. Vijay alleged that former minister V. Senthil Balaji misused his official position.
The Chief Minister further claimed that officials and associates linked to Balaji were involved in these alleged transactions. He specifically named DMK President M.K. Stalin and party leader Udhayanidhi Stalin in relation to the ED’s accusations. However, he noted that these remain allegations, with no court having convicted them.
Vijay stated that the records are extensive and would take nearly two days to review fully, which is why he presented only a summary to the Assembly. He challenged the DMK to respond to the allegations instead of demanding evidence, asserting that proof is already in the public domain.
Concluding his remarks, CM Vijay expressed that he entered politics not for power or position, but to serve the people. He referenced the legacies of C.N. Annadurai, M.G. Ramachandran, and N.T. Rama Rao, stating that ultimately, the love of the people will prevail over political opposition.
