Washington, February 22: President Donald Trump has approved an emergency declaration for Washington D.C. This decision comes in response to a broken sewer line that has been continuously leaking wastewater into the Potomac River, creating a serious situation.

According to a report from Xinhua News Agency, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced in a press release that federal disaster assistance will be provided to the District of Columbia to address the emergency caused by the sewer line break since January 19. This assistance aims to bolster relief efforts.

FEMA stated that the President’s approval allows the agency to coordinate all relief operations. The goal is to alleviate local distress, save lives, protect property, and ensure the health and safety of residents. This aid will also extend to areas in Maryland and Virginia that fall under the administrative responsibility of the District.

Under the President’s approval, FEMA can gather personnel, equipment, and other resources to assist in response operations. This support includes emergency rescue methods under the agency’s Public Assistance Program, with the federal government covering 75% of eligible costs.

Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser reiterated on Friday that the sewage spill in the Potomac has not affected drinking water.

It has been reported that a section of the Potomac Interceptor, a major sewer pipeline operated by D.C. Water, broke on January 19. This incident led to over 200 million gallons of wastewater flowing into the Potomac River. Subsequently, on February 18, Mayor Bowser declared a local public emergency to facilitate federal assistance after nearly a month of this ongoing crisis.
