Agartala, February 11: Tripura’s Chief Minister Manik Saha announced on Wednesday that the VB Giraam G Act has been implemented with a clear focus on rural development and transparency, aiming to minimize corruption.

During the state-level launch event of the VB Giraam G scheme at Swami Vivekananda Stadium, the Chief Minister inaugurated several projects from the Rural Development Department. Central Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, was also present at the event.

Saha stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister Chouhan, the VB Giraam G Act has faced attempts of misinformation from opposition parties. He emphasized, “This Act is designed with rural development at its core. Previously, many schemes were renamed, yet the opposition remained silent. Without rural development, neither the state nor the country can progress. Prime Minister Modi is consistently working towards this goal, advocating for ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Prayas’.”

The Chief Minister pointed out that the earlier MGNREGA scheme had several flaws, particularly the role of middlemen, which caused difficulties for workers. He remarked, “To protect workers from middlemen and corruption, the Prime Minister introduced the VB Giraam G Bill, 2025.”

Saha further noted that the opposition failed to understand the full name of VB Giraam G—‘Vikasit Bharat-Gurantee for Employment and Livelihood Mission (Rural)’—and created unnecessary uproar in Parliament, despite the bill being passed into law.

He explained, “The primary objective of this Act is to address the shortcomings of MGNREGA. This change was essential. It ensures greater work guarantees and better financial provisions for rural development. The Act also emphasizes the construction of sustainable infrastructure and accountability. Previously, workers were often misled under the guise of employment.”

Highlighting transparency measures, the Chief Minister stated that digital tracking and reducing corruption were key reasons for introducing this Act. He added, “This law represents a significant shift in India’s approach to rural employment and development. Initially, 100 days of guaranteed employment were provided; now it has been increased to 125 days.”

At the event, Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that ₹10 lakh crore would be spent in rural India over the next five years under the VB Giraam G scheme. He described this initiative as providing a comprehensive roadmap for building a ‘Developed India’, designed with the interests of all societal segments in mind.

Chouhan mentioned key features of the scheme, stating that 125 days of employment are now guaranteed, up from the previous 100 days. He revealed that ₹1,51,282 crore has been allocated for rural programs, with an additional ₹55,000 crore provided through the Finance Commission. This brings the total annual allocation to over ₹2 lakh crore.

The event was attended by MPs and former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, Finance Minister Pranjit Singha Roy, Tourism Minister Sushant Chowdhury, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Tinku Roy, ARDD and Scheduled Caste Welfare Minister Sudhanshu Das, Panchayat Minister Kishore Barman, Industry and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma, along with MLAs, Secretary Abhishek Singh, District Council Chairpersons, and senior officials.
