Agartala, May 31: Union Minister of Power and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal Khattar, held a meeting with Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Sunday to review the state’s electricity sector and urban development plans. This information was provided in an official statement.
During the meeting, the Union Minister discussed priority areas under a detailed action plan for the electricity department and the state’s public sector undertakings (PSUs). The review also covered the Restructured Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) and the operational and financial status of electricity distribution companies (DISCOMs).
Khattar emphasized the need to reduce Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses and strengthen the financial condition of DISCOMs. He specifically pointed out the necessity of converting meters installed in government consumers and institutions to prepaid meters and increasing revenue collection.
The progress of smart metering in the state was also reviewed. The Union Minister instructed for the swift completion of this initiative. The state government assured that all government consumers would be connected to prepaid meters by August 2026 and that pending smart meter projects would be completed by July 2027.
In light of the increasing electricity demand, the minister reviewed the state’s resource adequacy and internal transmission network planning. He stated that transmission capacity should be expanded in line with electricity demand. The state government committed to rapidly strengthening internal transmission infrastructure.
The meeting also assessed the progress of the PM-KUSUM and PM Surya Ghar free electricity schemes. The Union Minister advised the state to leverage these schemes to enhance access to clean energy in remote and underserved areas.
The Tripura government has set a target to install rooftop solar systems in 200,000 households by March 2027. This initiative is expected to reduce electricity costs for consumers.
Manohar Lal Khattar assured full support and cooperation from the central government for the overall development of the state.
Chief Minister Manik Saha stated that the state government would take all necessary steps to expedite the implementation of approved projects and improve the overall performance of the electricity sector.
The meeting was attended by Tripura’s Energy Minister, senior state officials, representatives from the Ministry of Power, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and central public sector undertakings in the electricity sector.
