Imphal, August 27: Manipur’s Home Minister, Konthoujam Govindas Singh, firmly announced on Thursday that those responsible for the murder of four individuals from the Naga community in Kangpokpi district will face the full force of the law.
He warned that anyone attempting to disrupt or derail the peace process will not be spared.
The armed attack in Kangpokpi resulted in the deaths of at least four members of the Liangmai Naga community, with one person injured. Among the deceased was the principal of a private school.
Condemning the attack, the Home Minister stated that this senseless violence has deeply affected the Naga community and the peace-loving people of Manipur. It has also dealt a blow to collective efforts to restore peace and normalcy in the violence-affected state.
He emphasized, “Those responsible will have to face the law. Anyone attempting to obstruct or derail the peace process will not be spared.”
Expressing deep sorrow over the tragic attack on innocent Naga citizens on IT Road in Kangpokpi, he extended his heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured.
He urged leaders from all communities, civil society organizations, and his Naga brothers and sisters to maintain peace and exercise restraint following this tragic incident. Strict measures will be taken for justice, while peace and unity must prevail.
In the wake of the incident, central and state security forces launched a large-scale search operation to apprehend the suspected militants responsible for the murders.
Kangpokpi is primarily inhabited by the Kuki-Jo community, although there are also Naga residents in various parts of this troubled district.
Various Naga organizations, including the United Naga Council (UNC), have claimed that two to three armed Kuki militants attacked innocent Naga citizens between Makui Ashang and Thanamba. This area serves as a vital lifeline for the Naga communities living along IT Road.
Naga organizations condemned the attack and demanded immediate action against those responsible for the murders, labeling the incident as a serious threat to peace and communal harmony in the region.
The victims have been identified as Visobu Charenaamai, Tadsongbu Ringkangmai, Mariyakadibu Vijunamai, and Anil Vijunamai. Ringkangmai was the founder and principal of a private educational institution, Right Path School, while Charenaamai served as the chairman of Chawangkining Village Authority and was a former vice-president of a local organization.
