Agartala, March 16: The Tripura government has announced a 5% increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) for state government employees and pensioners. This decision will benefit a total of 183,582 individuals in the state.
During the second day of the budget session in the assembly, Chief Minister Manik Saha informed the house that the revised DA and DR will take effect from April 1, 2026. Following this announcement, members of the ruling party applauded in approval.
The Chief Minister made this declaration as Finance, Planning, and Coordination Minister Pranjit Singha Roy presented the budget for the fiscal year 2026-27. He noted that implementing the additional DA and DR will impose an annual burden of approximately ₹500 crore on the state government.
Meanwhile, opposition members raised concerns regarding the government’s decision. Congress leader and former minister Sudip Roy Barman, along with opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhary (CPI-M), argued that the DA-DR increase should have been included in the finance minister’s budget proposals.
Sudip Roy Barman accused the Chief Minister of violating established traditions and rules. Jitendra Chaudhary also sought clarification on the pending DA-DR dues for state employees and pensioners.
The Chief Minister attempted to address these questions in the assembly, but was unable to complete his responses due to disruptions over other issues. Subsequently, acting Speaker Ram Prasad Paul adjourned the proceedings.
According to a finance department official, the decision will benefit 102,563 government employees and 81,019 pensioners. The official noted that since coming to power in March 2018, the BJP government has revised pay scales based on the recommendations of the 7th Central Pay Commission from October 1, 2018.
Since then, the state government has periodically increased DA and DR for employees and pensioners. However, state employees and pensioners have long been demanding that their DA-DR be equal to that of central government employees.
In the meantime, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath stated that the assembly’s budget session will continue until March 25. This marks the first meeting of the Tripura assembly this year.
