Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha stated on Thursday that the state is emerging as a major centre for higher education in the Northeast region. The state hosts seven universities, three engineering colleges, three medical colleges, and several other higher education and professional institutes, which are producing a highly skilled workforce.
While laying the foundation stone for the largest data centre in Northeast India, CM Saha highlighted Tripura’s top ranking in regulation and compliance in 2025. He said the state’s investor-friendly environment and reform-oriented governance are attracting growing interest from national and international investors.
He pointed out that India accounts for nearly 20 percent of global data consumption but has only about two percent of data storage capacity.
The Chief Minister added, “India’s storage capacity is expected to increase from the current 1.5 gigawatts to 8 gigawatts by 2030. Establishing data centres in Tripura is a timely and strategic step.”
He further noted that Tripura’s favourable climatic conditions, surplus power availability, pollution-free environment, and air connectivity make it an ideal location for data centre investment.
The presence of India’s third international internet gateway in Agartala ensures stable and high-speed connectivity, strengthening the state’s digital infrastructure.
CM Saha acknowledged the significant role played by the Directorate of Information Technology in facilitating the project through active land allocation, infrastructure development, and administrative coordination.
The Chief Minister highlighted Tripura’s progressive Data Centre Policy 2021 as one of the best in the country, offering financial incentives such as up to ₹12 lakh per year as 50 percent floor rental reimbursement, concessional land leases, electricity tariff at ₹4.75 per unit, bandwidth cost subsidies up to ₹10 lakh annually, and capital investment subsidies up to ₹1 crore per year.
He expressed confidence that Tripura is ready to emerge as a key data centre and IT hub in the Northeast region.
Referring to the recently held Migrant Tripuri Summit, he said 86 distinguished professionals of Tripuri origin from across the world participated, many of whom expressed interest in investing in the state’s IT sector.
To meet the growing demand for plug-and-play facilities, the IT department plans to establish Tripura’s second IT park near Agartala.
To promote local talent and entrepreneurship, the IT department has launched the New Generation Innovation Network (NGIN) scheme along with Tripura Startup Policy 2025. The policy offers comprehensive support including seed funding, operational cost reimbursement, prototype development grants, branding support, and intellectual property rights protection.
A ₹50 crore startup venture fund has also been set up to provide funding ranging from ₹25 lakh to ₹2 crore for startups.
Currently, Tripura has 188 registered startups, with over 50 new applications under consideration.
