Raipur, June 27: Chhattisgarh’s Mahasamund police have made a significant breakthrough in their fight against illegal drug trafficking. They arrested an interstate drug trafficker and seized 51 kilograms of cannabis valued at approximately ₹2.55 million.
In addition to the cannabis, authorities confiscated a vehicle used for transportation, a mobile phone, and other assets worth ₹510,000. The arrested individual is a resident of Uttar Pradesh. This operation was made possible through precise intelligence and swift action by the Mahasamund police, despite the trafficker’s attempt to flee upon noticing law enforcement.
The Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) had issued directives for effective and lawful action against the trafficking, transportation, and sale of illegal substances, prompting ongoing checks by local police.
During one such operation, police received a tip-off about a vehicle carrying cannabis from Odisha to Chhattisgarh. A blockade was set up on NH 53 at Rehtikhola. Shortly after, a Maruti Suzuki car approached and was stopped. The driver, however, attempted to escape into the nearby forest.
Upon questioning, the driver identified himself as Alok Kumar Chauhan, 32, and named the fleeing accomplice as Sanjeev Kumar. Further investigation revealed three plastic bags containing cannabis on the middle seat of the vehicle. Chauhan admitted he was transporting the drugs from Bhubaneswar to Kanpur for sale.
The arrested individual, Alok Kumar Chauhan, resides in Negwa Khiriya, Kishani, Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh. Authorities are still searching for the fugitive, Sanjeev Kumar, from West Sagar Pur, Southwest Delhi.
The total value of the seized items includes 51 kilograms of cannabis (worth ₹2.55 million), a car (valued at ₹500,000), and a mobile phone (worth ₹10,000), bringing the total estimated value of the confiscated assets to around ₹3.06 million. The police are proceeding with legal action against the arrested individual.
