Agartala, August 23: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced on Sunday that the state government will take steps to find a permanent solution to the recurring flood problem. He assured that the administration is fully alert and working around the clock to provide relief and assistance to those affected.
After visiting several flood-affected areas, including relief camps set up at Vivekananda School and Ashram Chaumuhani in West Tripura district, the Chief Minister interacted with the affected individuals and assessed the relief and rehabilitation efforts.
Saha informed the media, “I have received reports of sudden flooding in various areas of Khowai and West Tripura districts. Heavy rainfall in the Baramura hills of the West district has caused water to inundate several regions. A similar situation occurred in August 2024. All officials, from the district magistrate to the revenue department secretary, are actively working. I was in a program in Amarpur when I spoke to officials over the phone. The water level of the Howrah River had risen above the danger mark, but it is now gradually receding, which is a good sign. Currently, there is no rain.”
He mentioned that relief camps have been established in the affected areas, providing food and essential supplies, including infant nutrition, for those seeking shelter.
“The disaster response teams are deployed on-site. Boats have also been arranged. I have visited some affected areas. Reports indicate that 17 relief camps have been opened, currently housing a total of 1,305 individuals from 413 families,” the Chief Minister stated.
Saha emphasized that the state government is also working to find a permanent solution to the recurring flood issue.
“The government is studying options to find a lasting solution to this problem. Embankments have been constructed, and further measures are being taken. However, we cannot fight nature. We are exercising full vigilance and taking every possible step,” he added.
The Chief Minister noted that National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are on standby to handle any emergencies, and the administration is continuously monitoring the flood situation.
“NDRF teams are on alert. Councillors, party workers, and others are working 24/7. We are keeping a close watch on the situation. The West district has been the most affected,” Saha said.
He interacted with individuals in the relief camps to gather information about the availability of essential items, food, and other basic facilities.
The Chief Minister instructed relevant officials to ensure that all necessary assistance reaches the affected people without delay.
He reiterated that the state government and district administration are working in coordination to manage the situation and provide immediate relief to those impacted.
During the Chief Minister’s visit, Milind Ramteke, Secretary of Revenue, Relief, Rehabilitation, and Disaster Management Department, Vishal Kumar, District Magistrate of West Tripura, and other senior officials were also present.
