Bhopal, August 23: Madhya Pradesh is under a heavy rain alert for the next five days, with forecasts predicting thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by winds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour. This information was released in a press statement by the Meteorological Center in Bhopal on Sunday.
The warning is effective until August 26. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for several districts across the state, particularly in eastern and central Madhya Pradesh, where the impact is expected to be most severe.
As of 8:30 AM on August 23, significant rainfall was recorded in various locations over the past 24 hours. Gohpal received 98 mm, Jaitahri 85.6 mm, Budhar 85 mm, and Baihar 82 mm. Heavy rainfall was also noted in Shadol, Anuppur, Balaghat, Narsinghpur, Chhindwara, Tikamgarh, and Satna districts. Winds reached speeds of 39 km/h in Tikamgarh and 35 km/h in Hoshangabad.
The forecast for the next five days indicates that Dindori, Balaghat, Narmadapuram, Jabalpur, Narsinghpur, Mandla, Damoh, and Sagar districts may experience very heavy rainfall on different days, along with thunderstorms and lightning. Warnings have also been issued for heavy rainfall and strong winds in most districts of Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, Chambal, Rewa, Shadol, and Jabalpur divisions.
In response to the situation, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav arrived directly in Rewa from Delhi on Sunday to assess the flood-affected areas. He reviewed the excessive rainfall and relief efforts with local representatives and officials in the Rewa, Shadol, and Jabalpur divisions.
The Chief Minister directed immediate assistance for affected individuals. He emphasized the need to ensure food, drinking water, and medical facilities in relief camps, set up special medical camps in flood-affected villages and urban wards, chlorinate drinking water sources, and restore electricity supply promptly.
He also ordered a special cleanliness campaign and directed immediate surveys of crop damage to provide farmers with necessary seeds and assistance. The safety of flood-affected individuals is the government’s top priority, and the administration is committed to supporting every affected family with sensitivity and urgency.
Additionally, he instructed the dispatch of veterinary teams for animal treatment, proper disposal of dead animals to prevent disease outbreaks, and ensuring adequate fodder supply in shelters and cow sheds.
With the weather system expected to remain active in the coming days, authorities have been advised to stay vigilant. The IMD has warned of potential flooding in low-lying areas, sudden increases in river water levels, damage to weak structures, disruptions to electricity and transportation services, and risks to people, animals, and standing crops.
People are advised to stay indoors during storms, avoid open fields and trees during lightning, secure temporary structures, and exercise caution when traveling on flooded roads.
