Trinamool Congress Protests Against Voter List Name Removals in West Bengal

Kolkata, March 1: Members of the Trinamool Congress staged a protest in Hasnabad, North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, against the removal of names from the final voter list.

Local leaders and activists set tires ablaze on the streets Saturday night, chanting slogans against the Election Commission of India (ECI). They also burned an effigy of Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in the state assembly.

The protests caused significant disruption on the local Lebukhali Road, halting traffic in the area. Police arrived on the scene to bring the situation under control.

Trinamool Congress leaders claimed that legitimate voters’ names were deliberately removed from the voter list. They accused the Election Commission of selectively targeting minority-dominated booths, stating that approximately 400 minority voters’ names were removed from booth number 111 in Shahpur. “This conspiracy by the BJP and the Election Commission will not be tolerated,” they asserted.

The final voter list for West Bengal was published on Saturday following a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. The release of this list sparked outrage and protests across various parts of the state.

Activists reported that 16,125 voters’ names were removed from the Basirhat subdivision. Protests also erupted in Hasnabad, which falls under the Basirhat Dakshin assembly constituency.

According to local sources, out of 1,065 individuals registered at booth number 111 in Shahpur, 400 were marked as ‘removed’ from the final voter list.

Shahjahan Moral stated, “Around 400 minority names have been removed from the voter list published by the Election Commission. However, 120 Hindu voters’ names remain. This was done because it is a minority-dominated booth. We have protested on the streets against this.”
