Kolkata, June 10: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) approached the Kolkata High Court on Wednesday. The party is contesting the alleged actions taken by the state’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at its offices, related to discrepancies in the signatures of legislators.
In a petition filed in the single-judge vacation court of Justice Sougata Bhattacharya, senior lawyer and four-time Lok Sabha member Kalyan Banerjee stated that raids and searches were conducted in the absence of key witnesses. Important documents were also scrutinized at two party offices that were simultaneously raided.
Banerjee pointed out in the petition that these searches disregarded the fact that a hearing is pending on a petition filed by TMC General Secretary and Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee, challenging the CID summons issued to him.
Justice Bhattacharya accepted the petition, and the case will be heard on Thursday. Additionally, Justice Kaushik Chanda’s single-judge bench will also hear Abhishek Banerjee’s earlier petition on the same day. This petition challenges the CID summons and seeks protection from police actions, including potential arrest. A hearing on this petition was scheduled for Wednesday.
Notably, CID officials conducted simultaneous raids on multiple locations on Tuesday afternoon. These included the TMC office near former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat, South Kolkata, and another office on Camac Street in central Kolkata. Abhishek Banerjee managed his operations from the Camac Street office.
Abhishek Banerjee has previously evaded three notices from the state investigation agency regarding discrepancies in signatures related to a crucial proposal for appointments to key opposition positions in the West Bengal Assembly.
