Kolkata, June 22: The Trinamool Congress, led by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Kolkata High Court on Monday. The petition seeks intervention to prevent incidents of egg-throwing against party leaders and workers.
This PIL was presented before a bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Tapa Brata Chakraborty. Lawyer Prabhanja Banerjee requested an urgent hearing, with the case expected to be heard on Tuesday.
The party has alleged that two legislators, Kunal Ghosh and Madan Mitra, along with three MPs—Abhishek Banerjee, Kalyan Banerjee, and Derek O’Brien—were targeted in a coordinated attack. They also claimed that attacks on party workers and the destruction of party offices are occurring throughout the state.
Following the state assembly elections, Trinamool’s General Secretary and MP from Diamond Harbour, Abhishek Banerjee, was attacked during a visit to Sonarpur in the South 24 Parganas district. Similarly, MP Kalyan Banerjee faced an assault in the Chanditala area of Hooghly district.
Recently, Kunal Ghosh, an MLA from Belghoria, was pelted with eggs outside Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat, South Kolkata. Madan Mitra also faced an attack in his assembly constituency of Kamakhyaguri in North 24 Parganas, where his car was vandalized. These incidents are highlighted in the PIL.
The party has condemned the police’s treatment of arrested Trinamool leaders, who were reportedly tied with ropes and paraded in their underwear. Since the change in power, various allegations have led to the arrest of Trinamool leaders across the state.
Following these arrests, leaders and workers from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and some locals have pelted eggs at the accused. To manage the situation, police have placed helmets on the heads of the arrested Trinamool leaders. In response to these incidents, the Trinamool Congress has now approached the High Court.
