Mumbai, July 29: A delegation led by senior leader Prem Singh Chandumajra from the Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit) met with Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Tuesday to discuss various Sikh and Punjab-related issues. The delegation raised critical topics, including the parole of Jagtar Singh, the death sentence of Balwant Singh Rajona, the elections for the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), and the smooth operation of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor.
Chandumajra welcomed the central government‘s recent decisions regarding paper leak cases and urged the Punjab government to ensure accountability.
In an exclusive conversation with a news agency after the meeting, Chandumajra explained that the Shiromani Akali Dal discussed significant Sikh and Punjab-related matters in detail. He mentioned that Jagtar Singh’s mother is seriously ill and should be granted parole on humanitarian grounds to visit her.
The delegation presented this sensitive issue to the governor, requesting that even if there are legal hurdles, a humanitarian solution should be sought. Chandumajra stated that the governor assured them he would raise this matter with the Union Home Minister and work towards a resolution.
The delegation also reiterated their demand to commute Balwant Singh Rajona’s death sentence to life imprisonment. Rajona was convicted in the assassination case of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh in 1995.
Additionally, they called for the early conduct of SGPC elections and the uninterrupted functioning of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor. Chandumajra emphasized that these Sikh issues have been pending for a long time and require serious decisions.
Regarding the paper leak issue, Chandumajra noted that recent developments have sent a significant message across the country: if issues are raised above politics and with selfless intent, solutions are possible. The students’ concerns have been addressed, and the acceptance of their demands by the central government is a positive step. This sends a message that dialogue and logical solutions should be prioritized over political maneuvering. He thanked the central government for accepting the students’ demands, which helped avert potential chaos and strengthened faith in the democratic system.
Chandumajra criticized the Punjab government, questioning why the relevant minister has not resigned despite the pharmacy exam paper leak. The Aam Aadmi Party and its national leadership have claimed that no paper leak occurred in Punjab, even though the pharmacy exam issue has become public. The government should provide clear answers and ensure accountability.
He asserted that any interference with the future of the youth is unacceptable. Ensuring transparency and fairness in recruitment exams is the government’s responsibility. Democracy demands that disputes be resolved through dialogue, reasoning, and constitutional processes to maintain public trust and prevent future occurrences of such issues.
