New Delhi, April 27: The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, T.S. Sandhu, expressed his condolences on the passing of celebrated photographer Raghu Rai.
In a post on the social media platform X, Sandhu stated, “The world of photography has lost a great personality with the demise of Raghu Rai.”
He added, “He was an unparalleled artist. His work showcased not only technical excellence but also profound human sensitivity. He captured the essence of India with remarkable depth and sensitivity through his photographs. His iconic images will continue to inspire future generations and serve as a benchmark for storytelling through photography.”
Sandhu extended his heartfelt sympathies to Rai’s wife, Gurmeet Sangha Rai, his family, and the entire photography community. “Om Shanti,” he concluded.
Raghu Rai, aged 83, passed away on Sunday after battling cancer for the past two years. His last rites were performed at the Lodhi Road crematorium in the evening.
Over the past 60 years, Rai documented the myriad colors of life, featuring everyone from former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to classical music legends, and most importantly, the lives of ordinary people.
Rai was known for closely observing the social and political realities of his time. He was not just capturing faces but the very souls of people through his lens.
Awarded the Padma Shri, Rai’s photographs are currently on display at the exhibition “Raghu Rai – A Thousand Lives: Photographs from 1965-2005” at KNMA, which runs until April 30.
During the exhibition, Rai remarked to journalists, “When I was a photojournalist, I always questioned why we only capture images of prominent figures in Delhi. It is essential to go to villages and small towns to showcase their stories. Perhaps then leaders will pay attention. Remember, the common man is the true continuity of this country. Leaders and industrialists come and go, but the common man on the street remains. That is why my focus has always been on street photography.”
A disciple of the famous photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, Raghu Rai was nominated to join Magnum Photos in 1977.
