Bengaluru, July 23: Karnataka police have made a breakthrough in the high-profile suitcase murder case that emerged from the outskirts of Bengaluru. A 21-year-old suspect, identified as Gagan from Challaghatta, has been arrested.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Anita Haddanavar stated that a special team was formed to investigate the case. The team arrested the suspect within 24 hours after identifying the decomposed body of an elderly woman.
The police are currently gathering scientific evidence and reviewing CCTV footage as the investigation continues.
According to police sources, the suspect was a neighbor of the victim. He was reportedly addicted to gambling and was heavily in debt.
Allegations suggest that he murdered the woman with a sharp weapon to obtain money, stole her gold jewelry, and disposed of her body in a suitcase in a lake.
However, the complete sequence of events leading up to the murder has not yet been confirmed. The police have stated that the investigation is ongoing.
The victim has been identified as 61-year-old Jayamma, who also resided in Challaghatta. Her body was discovered on Tuesday, locked inside a suitcase at Ramohalli Lake, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Kumbalgodu police station in Bengaluru’s southwest division.
Local residents reported seeing a suitcase floating in the lake, prompting them to alert the police. Upon arrival, the police team retrieved the suitcase and found the body of a woman inside.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the body had been thrown into the lake two to three days prior.
During the investigation, police identified the victim as Jayamma. Her son, Jaishankar, had filed a missing person report on July 16, stating that she had not returned home after leaving around 3:30 PM that day. The family searched extensively but could not locate her, leading to the police report.
Following the discovery of the body, DCP Anita Haddanavar and other senior police officials visited the scene.
The police are examining Jayamma’s recent activities, her contacts, and potential motives for the murder. They are also analyzing forensic evidence and CCTV footage from areas she visited before her disappearance. The investigation is still ongoing.
