New Delhi, July 23: The Karkardooma Court in Delhi will hear the sentencing phase of the murder case of Intelligence Bureau officer Ankit Sharma on Thursday. This tragic incident occurred during the riots in Northeast Delhi in 2020. Former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councilor Tahir Hussain and four others have been convicted in connection with the case.
Earlier this month, on July 13, the court found Hussain and the four co-defendants guilty of charges including murder, rioting, kidnapping, and promoting enmity between different groups.
Following the verdict, the court instructed both the prosecution and defense to present their arguments regarding appropriate sentencing for the convicted individuals on July 23.
According to the prosecution, Ankit Sharma was murdered on February 25, 2020, near his home in the Khajuri Khas area. He became caught in the violence that erupted between two groups near the Chand Bagh bridge.
The prosecution alleges that Sharma attempted to calm both groups when a mob of approximately 20 to 25 individuals abducted him. He was subsequently attacked and stabbed multiple times before his body was discarded in a nearby drain.
In its ruling, the court found Tahir Hussain guilty of promoting enmity between groups, rioting, assault, using criminal force, and murder.
This case is based on an FIR filed at the Dayalpur police station following a complaint by Sharma’s father, Ravinder Kumar. After Hussain’s name surfaced in the case, the Aam Aadmi Party suspended him from the party.
The violence in Northeast Delhi in February 2020 resulted in the deaths of 53 individuals, numerous injuries, and extensive property damage amounting to millions of rupees.
