San Francisco, February 17: A tragic shooting at an ice arena in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, has resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including the assailant, who reportedly took his own life after the incident. Additionally, three others are in critical condition following the attack.

The shooting occurred at the Denis M. Lynch Arena during a hockey event involving numerous school students and their parents. The arena was filled with attendees, leading to chaos as the situation unfolded.

According to reports from Xinhua, initial investigations suggest that the assailant may have targeted family members. Among the deceased is a young girl. The three injured individuals are currently receiving treatment in the hospital, with their conditions being described as serious.

Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves addressed the media, stating that law enforcement arrived promptly at the scene and secured the area. All schools involved in the event have confirmed that their students are safe, and arrangements are being made for family reunifications.

Pawtucket, located just north of Providence and near the Massachusetts border, is home to approximately 75,000 residents, making it the fourth-largest city in the state.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee expressed his condolences on social media, noting that Rhode Island State Police are collaborating with local authorities on the investigation. He stated, “I pray for all those affected by this incident.”

Following the shooting, roads surrounding the arena were closed, and a heavy police presence was deployed in the area, with aerial surveillance conducted by helicopters.

This incident comes just months after a shooting at Brown University, located only a few miles away from Pawtucket. In December, a man opened fire in the Barus and Holley Engineering Building in Providence, resulting in the deaths of two students and injuries to nine others.
