
New Delhi, May 31: A tragic incident occurred in the Saidulajab area of South Delhi, where a construction site building collapsed, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the site to assess the situation.
The collapse happened on Saturday evening, and rescue operations continued throughout the night. Concerns remain that more individuals may be trapped under the debris, prompting the deployment of various agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, CM Rekha Gupta inspected the site today and reviewed the ongoing rescue efforts. Rescue teams have been working tirelessly since last night. Following the CM’s directives, immediate actions were taken, and a criminal case has been registered at the Mehrauli police station. A magistrate inquiry is also being ordered under the supervision of the district magistrate of South Delhi.
Officials have been instructed to inspect nearby dilapidated and hazardous buildings and take stringent action where necessary. The Chief Minister has ordered strict measures against all unauthorized constructions and directed that responsible officials from relevant departments face consequences.
The deceased has been identified as Ravi, aged 26. He was pronounced dead by the attending physician upon arrival at the hospital. Among the injured are Saika Khan (27), Aditya Sharma (24), Tarun Kumar (26), Anuj Dixit (25), Neelam Yadav (25), Kshitij Pratap (25), Aastha (25), and Vishal (24). All are currently receiving treatment at the AIIMS Trauma Center.
The accident occurred when a four-story commercial building under construction suddenly collapsed in the Saidulajab area. The debris also fell on a nearby tin-shed canteen, where children were present at the time. The incident caused panic in the area, leading to a large-scale rescue operation.
Rescue efforts involved teams from the National Disaster Response Force, Delhi Police, Civil Defense, Delhi Disaster Management Authority, Fire Department, and ambulance services.
As of now, a total of nine individuals have been rescued from the rubble. Two were saved by local residents, while seven were extricated with the assistance of NDRF and DDMA. Unfortunately, one of them has already succumbed to injuries.
