Tragic Bridge Collapse in Hamirpur Claims Lives of Six Workers

Lucknow, May 29: A devastating storm in Hamirpur, Uttar Pradesh, led to the collapse of a section of an under-construction bridge, resulting in the tragic deaths of six workers trapped under the debris. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced financial assistance of ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.

In a post on the social media platform X, the Chief Minister expressed his sorrow over the loss of life at the Betwa River in Hamirpur. He extended his condolences to the grieving families and instructed the district administration to expedite relief and rescue operations in collaboration with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

The Chief Minister also prayed for the departed souls to find peace and for the injured to recover swiftly.

Furthermore, Yogi Adityanath conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved families. He directed senior officials to reach the site immediately and enhance rescue efforts. The Chief Minister also instructed officials to maintain communication with the affected families to provide all possible assistance.

District Magistrate Abhishek Goyal informed reporters that around 2 AM on May 28, they received reports of the bridge slab collapsing, which connected Morakandar and Kurara in the Lalpur area. Local police and emergency services responded promptly to the scene. Prior advisories had been issued by the meteorological department regarding the severe weather conditions.

Goyal stated that the rescue operations commenced immediately after the incident. Reports indicate that some workers were taking shelter from the rain near a machine when the accident occurred.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Arvind Kumar Verma confirmed that local police were on-site as soon as the news broke. Six individuals were reported trapped under the rubble, five of whom have been identified. Efforts are underway to remove them from the debris. The deceased workers are believed to be from Banda and Hamirpur districts. The bridge was reportedly being constructed with the efforts of Rajya Sabha member Baburam Nishad.
