
Udhampur, May 8: The traditional Kaladi from Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir, is gaining recognition across the country. Known as “Jammu’s Desi Mozzarella,” this traditional cheese is becoming increasingly popular among consumers. Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted Kaladi in the 133rd episode of his popular program “Mann Ki Baat,” leading to a significant surge in demand.
The traditional process of making Kaladi is still alive in Udhampur and surrounding villages. Families have been engaged in this craft for generations, proudly passing down their heritage. This unique cheese, once made in village kitchens, is now available in urban markets and highway eateries.
Kaladi producer Povendar Sharma shared that his family has been in this business for generations. He learned the craft from his elders and continues to uphold the tradition. According to Sharma, the demand for Kaladi was low initially, but since the Prime Minister’s mention in “Mann Ki Baat,” sales have skyrocketed. He expressed joy, stating that whatever Kaladi they produce sells out immediately, with no stock left.
Gurbakhsh Singh, who has been running a shop in Udhampur for nearly 50 years, noted that the growing popularity of Kaladi has boosted business. He mentioned that new shops have opened, creating employment opportunities for locals. Singh emphasized that the Prime Minister’s mention has accelerated their work significantly.
Highway dhaba owner Angrej Singh remarked that Kaladi has become synonymous with Jammu and Kashmir. He pointed out that after the Prime Minister’s endorsement, tourists visiting the highway are specifically coming to taste Kaladi.
Kaladi is a highly popular traditional dairy product from Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the Jammu region. Also known as “Dogra Kaladi,” it is made from buffalo or cow milk and has a slightly salty, smoky flavor with a flexible texture. This is why it is often referred to as “Jammu’s Desi Mozzarella.” Its identity has been further solidified after receiving a Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
Tourist Narendra Singh, who visited Udhampur, expressed his fondness for Kaladi, stating that he always makes it a point to taste it whenever he visits. He recalled the Prime Minister’s words in “Mann Ki Baat,” where he mentioned that he would definitely try Kaladi whenever he visits Katra, Udhampur, or Jammu. Singh believes it is a matter of pride for the entire Jammu and Kashmir region, especially the Dogra culture, that Kaladi is now gaining international recognition.
