Panama, October 10 (Daily Kiran) : Late Friday night and early Saturday morning, Panama experienced two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.7 and 6.6 on the Richter scale. The tremors caused widespread panic across the country, prompting residents to flee their homes in fear.
The first quake struck with a magnitude of 7.7, centered approximately 10 kilometers below the surface. The impact was felt as far as 100 miles from the epicenter, shaking buildings and sending people to safety. Shortly after, a second tremor measuring 6.6 followed, with its epicenter also located at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Reports indicate that buildings collapsed and roads sustained heavy damage, particularly in the central region of Panama. The tremors created a state of alarm, with many residents opting to remain outdoors throughout the night due to their fears of aftershocks.
Panama City, the capital, also felt the effects of the earthquakes, with numerous buildings showing signs of damage, including cracks in walls. Residents were hesitant to return indoors, waiting for updates on the situation.
President José Raúl Mulino stated that no casualties or injuries had been reported as of Friday evening, although he acknowledged that the situation could change rapidly.
Initially, the U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued alerts for potential tsunami waves along Panama’s coast but later reported that conditions had stabilized. The tremors serve as a stark reminder of the region’s seismic activity, leaving many in a state of fear and uncertainty.
