Kolkata, May 7: Recent political developments and election results in West Bengal have captured national attention. Following the impressive success of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state, a wave of happiness has emerged. Social media influencer Sharmistha Panoli has termed this a significant victory for the people of Bengal.
In an interview on Thursday, Sharmistha expressed her joy, stating that the residents of the state have been grappling with numerous issues for a long time. She remarked, “I am very happy because the people of Bengal have been troubled for quite some time. Whether it is the tragic case of R.G. Kar Medical College, the serious issue of illegal infiltration, or the lack of basic development work, the public voted for change on all these fronts.”
She noted that wherever the BJP has come to power, their track record has been commendable.
Sharmistha Panoli was previously arrested by Kolkata police in May-June 2025 concerning ‘Operation Sindoor’, where she made comments about Bollywood’s three Khans (Shah Rukh, Salman, Aamir) and used offensive language against a particular religion.
Questioning her prior arrest and police actions, Sharmistha launched a strong attack on the TMC government. She characterized her arrest as part of “political vendetta” and “appeasement.”
Sharmistha stated, “Under TMC rule, we have seen their members often make derogatory remarks about Hindu deities, labeling it as freedom of expression. However, when I supported the army during ‘Operation Sindoor’, my words were twisted, and the police traveled 1,500 kilometers across five states to arrest me, which was completely unwarranted. This was clearly politics aimed at appeasing a specific vote bank.”
Referring to Bengal’s historical and cultural heritage, she highlighted that Bengal has been a major economic center since the days of the East India Company.
She said, “Bengal has a rich cultural heritage, and its people have always fought for their rights. I believe that by choosing the BJP, the people of Bengal have actually voted for democracy. I feel immense joy and pride that they stood up for their rights.”
When asked about the state of democracy in Bengal, she described it as a “double-edged sword.” Sharmistha explained, “Democracy existed in the sense that elections were held and people voted, but those who came to power considered themselves kings. TMC members grossly misused their powers, suffocating the common public.”
Responding to questions about Mamata Banerjee’s displeasure, Sharmistha answered calmly. She stated, “I think this was part of politics and appeasement. As I mentioned, she wanted to please her vote bank. I do not believe there is any personal grudge against me. This was all part of her political game.”
