Kolkata, September 16 (Daily Kiran) : The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to meet with representatives from both factions of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Thursday in New Delhi. This meeting comes as the party prepares for upcoming by-elections in the Nandigram and Rejingar assembly constituencies on October 6.
Leading the first faction, which refers to itself as the “rebellious yet majority group,” is Ritabrata Banerjee. They will meet with the ECI at 3 PM at the commission’s headquarters on Ashok Road. Following this, the faction led by former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee, calling themselves the “authentic yet minority group,” will have their turn at 4 PM.
While the ECI Secretary Ashwani Kumar Mohal did not disclose the agenda for these meetings, sources indicate that the discussions will revolve around each faction’s claims regarding the party name and symbol.
Each faction will be represented by a five-member delegation. The ECI plans to make a decision on the party’s name and symbol after hearing arguments from both sides.
These meetings hold significant importance as both factions have already nominated candidates for the by-elections. The deadline for nominations was Wednesday. In Rejingar, the candidate from Mamata Banerjee’s faction is Rabiul Alam Chowdhury, while Ritabrata’s faction has nominated Sheikh Saifuddin. In Nandigram, Mamata’s candidate is Sanchita Pradhan Dey, and Ritabrata’s faction has chosen Mohammad Ateesamul Haq.
TMC’s internal conflict and the upcoming elections are closely watched as they could impact the party’s future in West Bengal.
