Assam Chief Minister Declares BJP Victory in Nagaon a Major Blow to Rahul Gandhis Politics

Guwahati, October 9 (Daily Kiran) : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma characterized the BJP’s recent victory in the Nagaon by-election as a substantial setback for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Sarma asserted that the election results conveyed a clear message: the nation is greater than any single leader.

The CM criticized Gandhi for engaging in politics that he believes undermines India’s cultural identity. Sarma emphasized that this defeat represents a significant failure for Gandhi’s political strategies. “Voters have sent a message that the country is above you,” he said, urging Gandhi to refrain from actions that might weaken the nation and its culture.

Sarma accused Gandhi of collaborating with forces opposed to India’s progress. He stated that the people of Assam have delivered a political message through their votes, indicating a preference for a leadership that prioritizes national interests.

According to the Election Commission of India, BJP candidate Debashish Sharma won the Nagaon by-election by a margin of 140,257 votes, securing a total of 711,912 votes. In contrast, Badaruddin Ajmal of the All India United Democratic Front received 571,637 votes, while Congress candidate Sibamani Bora finished third with 129,136 votes.

This victory marks a significant return for the BJP to a seat previously held by Congress in the 2019 and 2024 general elections. Sarma noted that the BJP garnered nearly 50% of the total votes, claiming that the party has expanded its support beyond its traditional voter base to include segments of religious minority communities.

The outcome in Nagaon is politically crucial for the BJP, as it reclaims a seat that Congress had dominated in recent elections. The Chief Minister concluded that the results reflect public endorsement of the BJP’s development agenda in Assam, signaling a rejection of the opposition’s political perspective.
