Kolkata, October 9 (Daily Kiran) : Kolkata’s Chief Secretary, Manoj Kumar Agarwal, has taken legal action against Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra after she referred to him as a “vote thief” on social media. The notice, sent on October 9, alleges that Moitra’s comments were made while Agarwal was serving as the Chief Electoral Officer during this year’s West Bengal Assembly elections.
In her posts, Moitra accused Agarwal of unlawfully denying millions of legitimate Bengali voters their right to vote. She claimed that he would face consequences and would not escape accountability.
Agarwal’s legal counsel stated that, as the former Chief Electoral Officer, he fulfilled his duties in accordance with the law and the directives of the Election Commission of India. The notice emphasizes that Moitra’s allegations have harmed Agarwal’s professional integrity, competence, and public image.
The legal notice demands that Moitra retract both controversial posts within 24 hours and issue a written apology. Additionally, it requests a written assurance that she will refrain from making similar defamatory statements in the future.
Furthermore, the notice seeks compensation of ₹10 crore for alleged defamation and ₹50,000 for legal and other expenses. Agarwal’s lawyer warned that failure to comply with these demands could lead to civil and criminal legal action against Moitra.
