Kolkata, March 7: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has expressed strong objections to President Droupadi Murmu’s recent statement, asserting that the West Bengal government has made significant and measurable progress for the tribal (ST) communities in recent years.
In a detailed post shared via TMC’s official ‘X’ handle, the party addressed the President, stating it is unfortunate that she has the misconception that no development has occurred for tribal communities in Bengal. The party respectfully outlined its achievements through various schemes and data.
The post highlighted that under the ‘Lakshmir Bhandar Scheme,’ the monthly financial assistance for ST women has been increased from ₹500 to ₹1,700 (annual ₹20,400). In the 2025-26 period, the Sikshashree Scholarship provided support to 109,272 ST students for their education. The Jai Johar Scheme has benefited 298,315 individuals with a monthly pension of ₹1,000, enhancing economic security for tribal families.
TMC also mentioned the establishment of the ‘Sidhu Kanhu Memorial (Santhali Medium) Basic School,’ allowing ST children to receive education in their mother tongue, Santhali. In the Jungle Mahal districts, 35,845 ST individuals are covered under the West Bengal Kendu Leaves Collectors Social Security Scheme. For livelihood support, each women’s self-help group (SHG) received ₹30,000 in the current financial year, with a total of ₹23.80 crores distributed to 7,932 SHGs so far.
The focus for the development of tribal areas includes last-mile connectivity, drinking water, sanitation, education, health, nutrition, and preservation of cultural heritage. This encompasses the construction of roads, bridges, hand pumps, solar-based tube wells, repairs of ST hostels, community halls, ICDS centers, Jaher Than and Majhi Than constructions, and installation of solar street lights. A total of ₹78.94 crores has been allocated for these initiatives.
TMC emphasized that all these schemes and projects are measurable at the grassroots level, aimed at ensuring respect, opportunities, and inclusive development for tribal communities across Bengal. The party urged the President to consider these efforts and understand the Bengal government’s commitment.
