Srinagar, July 28: Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti, issued an apology to the people of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday for her comments made during a recent protest at Jantar Mantar. She acknowledged that she inadvertently omitted a crucial phrase while speaking to the media.
Mufti stated that while referencing Omar Abdullah’s tenure as the Union Minister of State for External Affairs, her intention was to make a specific point regarding the actions of security forces in Kashmir.
However, she admitted that she accidentally left out the phrase, “provides an excuse for maintaining security forces.”
The PDP leader recognized that the omission altered the context of her statement and took responsibility for the error. She expressed, “I apologize to the people of Jammu and Kashmir for this mistake.”
In response to the controversy surrounding the video clips of her statements that went viral on social media, Mehbooba Mufti dismissed claims that the footage had been tampered with or created using artificial intelligence (AI).
She clarified that the viral video is authentic and accurate, explaining that the controversy arose due to her unintentional omission during a conversation with journalists.
This clarification comes amid a political uproar over her statements made at Jantar Mantar, which elicited sharp reactions from political circles in Jammu and Kashmir and social media users.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah criticized Mehbooba Mufti’s remarks made at Jantar Mantar. Sajjad Gani Lone, president of the People’s Conference and current MLA, also condemned her statements, asserting that it was an attempt to justify the use of force in Jammu and Kashmir. The People’s Conference even organized a protest march against her comments.
Initially, the PDP attempted to defend Mufti, alleging that the video portraying her remarks was generated through AI, but she has since issued an apology.
