Kolkata, June 23: West Bengal police seized gold jewelry worth ₹4 crore from the residence of district council member Tina Bhowmik Saha in Nadia district on Tuesday. Saha is known to be a close associate of influential Trinamool Congress leader Sabyasachi Dutta.
The police conducted a search at Saha’s home based on information obtained from the recently arrested former mayor of Bidhannagar. All the seized items have been confiscated, and an investigation is underway.
According to police, the gold was recovered after an overnight search at Saha’s residence in Tehatta. Earlier this month, the Bidhannagar South police arrested former mayor and TMC leader Sabyasachi Dutta on multiple charges, including extortion and illegal property. He was a candidate in the recent assembly elections from Barasat but did not win.
Investigators looking into Dutta’s illegal assets discovered that he had amassed gold primarily through extortion and black money. They found receipts for gold purchases from his flat in Rajarhat and a bank locker, along with a significant quantity of gold jewelry.
Based on various leads obtained during questioning, the Bidhannagar police conducted a search operation last night. They took Dutta along for the overnight search at the home of Tina Bhowmik Saha, who is reportedly closely connected to him.
Approximately 3 kilograms of gold jewelry were recovered from Saha’s home, with a market value estimated at over ₹4.39 crore. The police are currently interrogating Tina Bhowmik Saha to determine how she acquired such a large quantity of gold jewelry. However, no further details about the investigation have been disclosed.
