Abhijit Majumdar Resigns from TMC, Labels Party as Trinamool Muslim Congress

Kolkata, May 29: Abhijit Majumdar, a leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and candidate from Guwahati in Assam, has officially resigned from the party. He sent his resignation letter via email to TMC chief Mamata Banerjee.

Majumdar accused the TMC of having developed an image as a party solely for Muslims in Assam. He stated that this perception extends beyond Assam, claiming that the party primarily serves the Muslim community in West Bengal as well. He expressed that he can no longer work for the party under these circumstances.

In an interview, Majumdar remarked, “I have been a member and secretary of the Assam TMC since its inception. I also led the TMC media cell and contested elections from Guwahati this time. No one who believes in Hindutva can remain in the TMC. The party has now become synonymous with ‘Trinamool Muslim Congress.’”

He further explained another reason for his departure: “The party shows a significant bias towards Bangladeshis and Muslims in Assam. TMC leaders never address issues concerning Hindus. As a Hindu, I find it inappropriate to stay in the party.”

Regarding the future of TMC in Assam, Majumdar stated, “There is nothing left of Congress in Assam. Not a single worker or individual can be seen at the Assam TMC office. I was the one who brought recognition to TMC in Assam, which has proven to be a wrong decision. Now, no one is interested in TMC in Assam.”

It is noteworthy that in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, Majumdar contested from Guwahati Central on a TMC ticket, finishing in fourth place with a total of 1,061 votes. The seat was won by BJP candidate Vijay Kumar Gupta.
