Ujjain, July 20: Thousands of devotees gathered at the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple on Monday to witness the Bhasma Aarti, held on the auspicious occasion of Ashadha Shukla Shashthi. The temple complex was filled with a large number of visitors eager to experience this divine ritual.
Early Monday morning, after seeking blessings from Lord Veerabhadra, the doors of Baba Mahakal were opened with the sound of drums and trumpets. As the devotees caught their first glimpse of Baba Mahakal after the grand adornment and Bhasma Aarti, the temple echoed with chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal.” The atmosphere was vibrant with the sounds of bells, conch shells, and sacred mantras.
With the opening of the temple gates, the ritual began with the ceremonial bathing of Lord Mahakal using Panchamrit, a mixture of milk, yogurt, ghee, sugar, and fruit juices. Offerings of bhang, sandalwood, and vermilion were made to Baba Mahakal. Following this, a silver crown, silver garland, rudraksha necklace, and floral wreaths were presented to the deity, enhancing the divine ambiance with fragrant flowers.
The chief priest of the Mahakal Temple conducted the grand Aarti, allowing many devotees to witness the Bhasma Aarti. A significant number of devotees had queued since the previous night to have a glimpse of their revered deity.
Traditionally, ashes from cremation grounds were offered to Mahakal, but now, a special preparation of cow dung from the Kapila cow and medicinal herbs is used for the Bhasma. During the Bhasma Aarti, it is mandatory for men to wear traditional dhoti and women to wear sarees.
The Aarti of Baba Mahakal is renowned both nationally and internationally, attracting not only the general public but also prominent personalities. To maintain order during the event, a substantial number of police personnel were deployed around the temple area.
