Budgam, September 3 (Daily Kiran) : Intelligence reports on Thursday led security forces to engage a group of terrorists in the Yusmarg area of Budgam district, Jammu and Kashmir. The operation involved para-commandos and personnel from the National Rifles, who began a cordon and search operation (CASO) in response to the information.
Sources indicated that a team of ten para-commandos patrolling the hilly terrain of Yusmarg encountered the hidden terrorists. Senior officials confirmed that troops from the 53 National Rifles arrived to reinforce the cordon, ensuring that the terrorists could not escape under the cover of darkness.
The area falls under the jurisdiction of the Khansahib police station, where reports suggest that two terrorists are trapped within the cordon. To bolster the operation, additional units of police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have also been deployed to the scene.
Budgam has witnessed significant anti-terror operations in the past. Notable operations include a January 2023 mission in the Charar-e-Sharif area, where two Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists were killed during a brief encounter. In January 2022, three Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists were eliminated in an overnight clash in the Zolwa Chadoora village.
Previous encounters in October 2020 also resulted in the deaths of terrorists in the outskirts of Chadoora and Nowgam. The most extensive operation in Budgam’s history took place in 1995 when a prolonged standoff lasted 66 days in Charar-e-Sharif. During this time, Pakistani terrorist Mast Gul and his armed group seized the historic Sufi shrine, leading to a complex military engagement aimed at preventing civilian casualties.
The situation escalated when the terrorists set fire to the town, resulting in significant destruction. Amid the chaos, Mast Gul managed to escape back to Pakistan. The conflict resulted in the deaths of approximately 20 terrorists, two soldiers, and five civilians.
