Mumbai, September 3 (Daily Kiran) : A potential disaster was averted in Mumbai on Thursday evening when a ferry carrying 38 people broke down in the Arabian Sea near the Gateway of India. The vessel, named Anwari, had 34 passengers and four crew members on board. Fortunately, another ferry arrived promptly to assist, ensuring everyone was safely brought back to the Gateway of India jetty.
The Anwari ferry typically offers a scenic 30-minute ride from the Gateway of India. Around 8:30 PM, while returning from its tour, the boat experienced a technical failure approximately 1.5 nautical miles from the jetty. The sudden breakdown caused panic among passengers.
Crew members quickly notified the control room about the situation. In response, the Mumbai police acted swiftly, assessing the situation and alerting nearby ferry operators for assistance.
Within minutes, a rescue ferry reached the stranded Anwari. It was secured and towed back to the jetty without incident, thanks to effective coordination among the police, ferry operators, and crew members.
All 34 passengers and four crew members were brought safely to shore, with no injuries reported. Authorities confirmed that the initial investigation indicated a technical malfunction in the boat’s engine. A thorough investigation is underway to examine the ferry’s fitness and safety standards.
