Chennai – An Air India flight from Thiruvananthapuram to Delhi made an emergency landing in Chennai on Sunday night due to what the airline described as a technical fault and bad weather. Flight AI2455 circled over Chennai Airport for nearly two hours before landing safely on the second attempt.

Congress MP K.C. Venugopal, who was on board, claimed in a post on X that during the first landing attempt, another aircraft was present on the runway. According to him, the pilot had to pull up the plane to avoid a collision, and the flight landed safely on the second attempt. Venugopal said several MPs and other passengers were aboard, and the incident was “a narrow escape from disaster.”

He further alleged that the aircraft had taken off late, encountered turbulence shortly after departure, and was then diverted to Chennai due to a signal fault. “We circled over Chennai Airport for about two hours. On the first attempt to land, we were told there was another aircraft on the runway. The captain’s quick decision saved our lives,” Venugopal wrote, urging the DGCA and Civil Aviation Ministry to investigate and ensure such lapses never occur again.

However, Air India denied that another aircraft was on the runway at the time. Responding to Venugopal’s post, the airline said the diversion to Chennai was a precautionary measure due to a technical problem and bad weather. It stated that during the first landing attempt, Chennai Air Traffic Control (ATC) had instructed the pilot to go around, but not because of another aircraft.

According to flight-tracking website FlightRadar24, AI2455 took off at 8:17 PM and was scheduled to reach Delhi at 10:45 PM.
