Kathmandu, September 4 (Daily Kiran) : A family in Kathmandu is celebrating after their missing relative was rescued following the recent devastating floods in Nepal. Kabir Mahajan had been unaccounted for over the past ten days, leaving his family in a state of distress and uncertainty.
On Friday, rescue teams successfully extracted Kabir from a tunnel. His younger brother, Amir Mahajan, expressed immense joy, stating, “We are incredibly happy that my older brother, who had been missing for ten days, has been found. It’s hard to put into words the happiness we feel.”
The family had struggled to sleep, their worries compounded by the constant updates from news reports and social media. They were consumed by thoughts of whether they would ever hear from Kabir again. Their anxious waiting finally ended around 8:30 AM on Friday when they received the news they had longed for.
Kabir was taken to Nepal Army Hospital in Chhauni for medical treatment, where the family caught a brief glimpse of him. Amir reported, “We saw him for a moment as he was being taken into the hospital. He seemed to be in stable condition, and we are waiting outside for more news.”
The family’s ordeal began on August 26, when severe flooding struck the Trishuli and Bhotekoshi river areas. Amir mentioned that he had spoken to Kabir just a day before the disaster hit.
“The past ten days have been incredibly painful and filled with uncertainty. We lost sleep and our appetite, constantly checking for updates, wondering if we would ever hear from my brother,” Amir recounted.
On Friday morning, as the family anxiously awaited news, they learned that another individual had been rescued from the tunnel. Shortly after, they received confirmation that Kabir was alive. The 45-year-old had been working as a supervisor at the hydro-power automation unit, and along with him, a 30-year-old foreman named Sanjay Sah was also rescued.
Following the successful rescue, the Mahajan family received a call from the Nepal Electricity Authority confirming Kabir’s safe extraction and the hospital he was being taken to.
This successful rescue has sparked renewed hope for other families still searching for their loved ones, with Nepal Police reporting that as of Friday afternoon, at least 1,295 people have died due to the floods, while 4,898 remain unaccounted for.
The floods have caused significant damage to hydroelectric projects and infrastructure in the Trishuli and Bhotekoshi corridors. Many individuals working on these projects are still reported missing.
The Mahajan family expressed deep gratitude to all those involved in the search efforts. Amir stated, “We want to sincerely thank the Nepal Army, the Armed Police Force’s specialized teams, the rescuers, and everyone who contributed to the search and rescue operations, as well as those who supported us during this challenging time.”
In a separate conversation, Sanjay Sah’s wife, Lakshmi Kumari Sah, who was also rescued from the same project, shared her relief and happiness for her husband’s safe return. “I was at home when I heard about his rescue at around 8:30 AM, and it brought immense joy to our family,” she said.
The rescues have instilled hope among families of other individuals believed to be trapped within the same hydro-power project. A viral video on social media featured Sah stating that three to four people were still unaccounted for from his unit, while over 40 had been rescued following the incident. The Independent Power Producers Association reported that 945 individuals working on 11 hydroelectric projects affected by the floods are still missing.
Tensions remain high as rescue operations continue in the wake of this natural disaster.
