Chandigarh, September 4 (Daily Kiran) : Punjab Congress President and MP Amarinder Singh Raja Wadding has reached out to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) regarding the alleged torture of social activist Mohanjeet Singh, also known as Mohanjeet Sheron, who has been vocal against drug abuse. In a letter, Wadding called for the NHRC’s intervention, highlighting serious accusations of detention, torture, and forced drug administration against Singh.
Wadding expressed concern on the social media platform X, questioning the treatment of citizens who protest against drug issues. He stated that it is alarming when individuals are persecuted for raising their voices against such a critical problem. He emphasized that power should never be a shield for cruelty and that those responsible must be held accountable under the law.
In the letter sent to the NHRC, Wadding recounted an incident from September 2, when Singh staged a peaceful protest during a rally by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in Sheron village, Sangrur district. Singh displayed a black flag from the rooftop of a house, questioning the government’s inability to control the drug menace even in the Chief Minister’s own district. Following the protest, he was taken into police custody.
Singh later alleged that during his detention, he was subjected to severe physical abuse, mental harassment, and degrading treatment. He claimed that officers beat him with slippers, administered electric shocks at the Sunam police station, forcibly spread his legs, pulled his beard and hair, and even sprinkled salt on his injuries.
Additionally, Singh accused the police of throwing him into a toilet and broadcasting the entire abuse process via video call to another individual. He also alleged that a Deputy Superintendent of Police threatened him, warning that he would not be allowed to leave his home if he reported the incident.
Wadding noted the serious nature of Singh’s claims, stating that the activist was reportedly forced to consume a narcotic during his detention. A subsequent drug test returned a positive result, leading to a case being filed against him for drug use. Wadding described the circumstances as highly suspicious and called for an independent and impartial investigation.
He urged the NHRC to take cognizance of the case, conduct a thorough and timely investigation, and demand detailed reports from the Punjab government and relevant police officials. He also requested the preservation of CCTV footage, medical records, drug test results, call records, and other electronic evidence. Furthermore, he insisted on an independent medical examination for Singh and an inquiry into the roles of all involved parties.
Wadding emphasized the need for protection for Singh against any threats, pressure, or harassment, and called for strict legal action against any police officers or individuals found guilty. He underscored the gravity of the case, asserting that immediate NHRC intervention is essential to uncover the truth and ensure justice.
