Agartala, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : In a bizarre turn of events, a professional thief in Agartala reportedly severed his own hand to evade arrest. However, police apprehended him on Tuesday while he was recovering in a hospital bed. The individual is accused of stealing a motorcycle and snatching a gold chain from an elderly woman.
The incident occurred on September 11 in the outskirts of Agartala, specifically in the Bankumari area. Two motorcycle-riding thieves targeted Geeta Rani Das, 65, during her morning walk with a neighbor, snatching a gold necklace valued at 1.7 million rupees.
Following the incident, Das filed a complaint at the Eastern Agartala Police Station, prompting an investigation. Under the leadership of Officer Krishnadhan Sarkar, police launched a thorough inquiry. They had already detained one accomplice and seized the motorcycle allegedly used in the daytime robbery, which was also reported stolen.
Despite these developments, the mastermind behind the crime remained at large. Police reviewed local CCTV footage showing two helmeted individuals on a motorcycle snatching the necklace.
Based on the information gathered during the investigation, Inspector Sarkar led a police team on a search operation across various locations in the state capital and its surroundings. Ultimately, they captured the alleged mastermind at Agartala Government Medical College and Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, where he had reportedly admitted himself after cutting off his right hand to avoid capture.
The main suspect allegedly sold the stolen necklace at a jewelry store in Agartala. In recent months, there have been multiple incidents of gold chain snatching in various districts of Tripura. Recently, two young men from Bihar were arrested for snatching a gold chain from an elderly woman in West Tripura.
According to police, the two suspects entered Radha Rani Debbarma’s home under the pretense of cleaning utensils when no male family members were present. They reportedly stole her gold chain and fled on a motorcycle.
In another incident, police arrested two women in Gomati district during the Rath Yatra festival after several chain snatching incidents. They recovered nine stolen gold chains worth approximately 2.2 million rupees.
These thefts occurred during the annual Rath Yatra at the historic Jagannath Bari in Udaipur, which attracted a large number of devotees.
