Kolkata, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : The Calcutta High Court has instructed the West Bengal police to secure the CCTV footage linked to the encounter that resulted in the death of Prabhash Mandal. Mandal was the main suspect in the rape and murder of a minor girl in BarUIPur, located in the South 24 Parganas district, earlier this year in July.
A division bench comprising Justices Arijit Banerjee and Ritobrato Kumar Mitra also urged for a swift completion of the ongoing investigation into the case. The next hearing is scheduled for three weeks from now, by which time the court expects the investigation to be concluded.
In July, a minor girl went missing from the Suryapur area under the BarUIPur police station. Her body was later discovered in a bag in a pond. This incident sparked violent protests from local residents, leading to a tense atmosphere in BarUIPur, during which an innocent young man was tragically beaten to death.
Police apprehended four individuals, including Prabhash Mandal, along with Diwakar Sardar, Anand Sardar, and Kabir Molla. On the night of July 7, police took Mandal to the crime scene for a reconstruction of events. Reports suggest that he attempted to flee by snatching a weapon from an officer and fired at the police team. In response, the police shot him dead.
Authorities from the BarUIPur police district claimed that the investigating officer, Arghya Mandal, had to fire his service weapon to protect himself and his colleagues. However, following numerous questions regarding the encounter, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has taken over the investigation.
Additionally, a petition has been filed in the Calcutta High Court requesting that a central agency conduct the investigation into this high-profile case.
