New Delhi, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : A significant agreement has been reached for the construction of the ₹15,624 crore Kishau Multi-Purpose Project on a tributary of the Yamuna River. This project, which will generate 422 megawatts of power, involves collaboration among six states, including Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Rajasthan.
On Tuesday, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhu announced that the electricity generated from this project is projected to yield over ₹1,000 crore annually. The project is strategically located at the border of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, with participation from various state leaders, including C.R. Patil, the Union Minister for Jal Shakti, and chief ministers from the involved states.
Following the signing, CM Sukhu explained that during a high-level meeting chaired by the Home Minister on June 16, the central government tentatively agreed that the beneficiary states—Delhi, Rajasthan, and Haryana—would share the estimated ₹2,000 crore cost associated with the state’s portion of the electricity project.
Sukhu emphasized that the state government has been proactive in protecting its financial interests, contrasting with the previous administration, which had agreed to contribute ₹800 crore. The current government, considering the state’s limited resources, rejected this offer to ensure better financial terms for Himachal Pradesh.
The Chief Minister also pointed out that the project will displace local populations, leading to significant challenges for the state. He argued that it would be unreasonable for the state to bear additional financial burdens and stressed the need for appropriate compensation for the state’s contributions to national progress.
Upon completion, the project is expected to provide Himachal Pradesh with 1,000 million units of electricity annually, translating into revenue exceeding ₹1,000 crore.
