The Role of Cinema: Beyond Entertainment, A Responsibility, Says Prakash Jha

Mumbai, March 14: Renowned filmmaker Prakash Jha is known for his candid views on serious topics. In a recent discussion, he highlighted the profound connection between oppression and revolution. Jha stated that when oppression crosses a certain threshold, revolution becomes inevitable. Unlike a sudden train accident, it erupts gradually, simmering beneath the surface.

In an exclusive interview, Jha explained, “Revolution is a natural and instinctive process. A volcano will erupt eventually. Oppression accumulates within, and when the limits of tolerance are breached, it bursts forth. We do not wake up suddenly; revolutions build over time. Time is the greatest teacher. If we live with and understand time, it teaches us everything.”

Jha believes that cinema serves as a mirror to society. It can address issues like oppression, inequality, and injustice, but always with responsibility and sensitivity.

He also shared his thoughts on the responsibilities of filmmakers. According to him, every dialogue, every image, and every story must be approached with sensitivity. The purpose of cinema is not just entertainment; it is also about emotionally connecting with people and evoking specific feelings. “If you want to say something, say it, but with sensitivity. One should not shy away from people or spread instability. Conversations should be creative, interesting, and engaging,” he emphasized.

The filmmaker also discussed the growing divide between theaters and OTT platforms. Managing a multiplex in Jamshedpur, he is well aware of the ground realities of India’s theater ecosystem.

He noted that big-budget entertaining films often overshadow smaller ones in terms of screen sharing. However, every film has its own market, and there is space for all. The decision to release directly on OTT platforms is usually driven by commercial reasons, as the risks and costs associated with theatrical releases are higher.
