Pithoragarh, September 11 (Daily Kiran) : Nestled in the dense forests and mountains of Uttarakhand, Maa Chandika Dhura Temple is a revered center of Shakti worship. This serene temple draws visitors with its tranquil surroundings and stunning natural vistas.
During the Chaitra and Sharadiya Navratri festivals, the temple hosts special fairs and rituals, attracting devotees from far and wide. The ideal time to visit is between October and March, as the monsoon season poses risks of landslides in the hilly regions, making travel hazardous.
On Friday, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami shared a special message about the temple on the social media platform X. He posted a video stating, “Maa Chandika Dhura Temple in Pithoragarh is a significant center of faith dedicated to Goddess Mahakali. This sacred site is renowned for its spiritual energy and unparalleled natural beauty. Be sure to visit this holy temple when you’re in Pithoragarh.”
The ancient architecture of the temple, along with the mysterious pond in the sanctum and the peaceful atmosphere, captivates all who visit. Maa Chandika is regarded as a symbol of justice, power, and protection.
Located about 10 kilometers from Pithoragarh town, the temple is surrounded by lush forests and mountains. In the local hill dialect, “Dhura” means high peak. It is also referred to as “Udiar Devi” due to its location within a cave-like structure on the hill.
According to ancient beliefs, in the 15th century, the lingam form of the goddess was brought from Chandika Ghat on the banks of the Ramganga River to this high peak. Chandika Ghat is considered the original site of the goddess.
Historical tales suggest that centuries ago, Maa Chandika’s original location was in the Hardev area of Bungachina, where her sister, Maa Mahananda Devi, also had a temple. Due to differences in temperament, Maa Chandika moved to the Ramganga bank (Chandika Ghat) at her sister’s request.
